El Prat airport (BCN) is 15 km away. The Aerobús takes 35 min, while metro L9 is the cheaper option. Once you are in town, the old town is easy to cover on foot.
Eixample and Poblenou tend to be calmer than the old town. Poblenou also gives you beach access and parks, which is a nice bonus.
