A ski pass for 38 francs, a mountain hut lunch for 8, a hotel with half board for under 60: Bansko is the new TikTok star among ski destinations — often accompanied by the comparison «One day in Zermatt = three days in Bulgaria». What TikTok promises
The clips show empty pistes above Bansko, après-ski with 2-franc beer and panoramas of the Pirin Mountains — alongside the message that ski holidays do not have to bankrupt you. The price comparison is correct: the 6-day ski pass in Bansko costs around 230 francs, in Zermatt more than 450. What the clips leave out: the gondola queue in Bansko during peak season and the difference in altitude — Bulgaria’s ski resorts end where Zermatt begins.
Getting there: quick and affordable
Wizz Air and Bulgaria Air fly direct from Zurich to Sofia in just over 2 hours — return fares from 120 to 180 francs, and even during the sports holidays often under 250. From Sofia to Bansko it is 2.5 hours: shuttle transfer from 25 francs, private transfer around 90. Borovets is even closer at just over an hour away. Compared with the train journey to Zermatt, the door-to-slope time is almost identical.
On the ground: the prices are real
A solid 4-star hotel with half board and spa in Bansko costs 55 to 90 francs per person per night, with good 3-star options from 40. Ski hire: around 90 francs for 6 days, ski instructor 35 per hour — half the Swiss rate. In the mountain hut, you will pay 8 to 14 francs for lunch with a drink. The 2.50 beer at the bar is not a TikTok invention.
The honest ski-week calculation
Per person, sharing a double room, season January/March: Zurich–Sofia flight 150 francs, return transfer 50, 6 nights in 3–4 star accommodation with half board 300, 6-day ski pass 230, ski hire 90, mountain huts and après-ski 130. Total: around 950 francs — and with a simpler hotel, 750 to 800. The same week in Zermatt: hardly possible for under 2000 to 2400 francs. The «half-price» claim is, if anything, understated.
Conclusion: checked — and where Zermatt wins
The verdict of the series: ski holidays in Bulgaria are no fairy tale compromise, but a genuine price miracle — ideal for beginners, families and anyone wanting a second ski week. To be fair: Bansko has 75 kilometres of pistes, Zermatt 360 up to 3883 metres with guaranteed snow — for ambitious frequent skiers, Switzerland remains the benchmark. For everyone else, the rule is simple: travel in January or March (less crowded than February), and the money saved is enough for the second week.
