Flying from Milan instead of Zurich is most relevant for travellers in German-speaking Switzerland when the fare is clearly lower and the trip to MXP is easy to organise. The key is not just the ticket price but the full calculation including train or car, parking, baggage, travel time and possibly a hotel night before an early departure. MXP can look better than ZRH on routes with heavy competition, long-haul markets served by many airlines and seasonal beach destinations. For Basel and French-speaking Switzerland, it often makes sense to compare BSL or GVA first before shifting to Italy.

When MXP really makes more sense than ZRH

The biggest savings potential appears when more airlines compete from Milan on the same route, or when low-cost carriers and Gulf airlines add pressure. This often happens in summer to Mediterranean destinations and on selected long-haul routes to Asia or North America. For travellers from Zurich, Zug, Lucerne or Ticino, MXP can be realistic if the train or car journey is manageable. It becomes less attractive if you need checked baggage, have a very early departure or lose the fare advantage again through parking, tolls and food costs on the way.

1 to 4: Spain, Greece, Turkey and Albania

Mallorca, Athens, Antalya and Tirana are among the destinations where Milan is often worth checking. Spain and Greece usually have broad supply from MXP, especially at off-peak times and outside the main school holiday windows. Turkey often benefits from strong demand and intense airline competition, while Albania stands out through cheaper point-to-point links. For all four, flexibility on travel days and hand baggage only can improve the MXP option. If your travel dates are fixed, you should still benchmark ZRH, BSL and GVA at the same time.

5 to 7: Thailand, the Maldives and Canada

On long-haul routes, flying from Milan instead of Zurich can pay off mainly where more connecting options come together. Bangkok and the Maldives are classic examples because multiple European and Gulf carriers often compete from MXP. Canada can also be interesting from Milan, especially with seasonal nonstop or one-stop options. Here, the full travel chain matters even more: longer ground travel, stricter baggage rules, possible transfers and tight connection times reduce comfort. If you travel as a couple or family, the fare gap needs to be clear enough to justify the detour to MXP.

8 to 10: Iceland, Copenhagen and Dubrovnik

It is not only beach holidays and long haul that matter. For coolcation plans and autumn extension trips, Iceland, Copenhagen and Dubrovnik can also be useful comparison routes. Iceland and Copenhagen often see pricing movement because of competition, while Dubrovnik can swing strongly by season. MXP becomes more interesting on these routes if you travel outside the busiest periods and have some flexibility. For short city breaks, though, be careful: if the trip to Milan costs you nearly half a day each way, the financial benefit disappears quickly.

💡 Always calculate door to door in CHF. Add train or car to MXP, parking or transfers, baggage, seat selection and a possible overnight stay. Only if MXP is still clearly cheaper than ZRH, BSL or GVA after that does the switch really make sense.

How to compare properly from Switzerland

Start with your nearest Swiss airport and then add MXP as an alternative, not as the default. For German-speaking Switzerland, BSL is often another strong price competitor, while travellers in French-speaking Switzerland should also check GVA and sometimes LYS. On every route, ask two questions: how much do I really save in CHF, and how much extra travel time am I buying. Flying from Milan instead of Zurich makes most sense for longer holidays, flexible travel dates and destinations served by many airlines. For weekend trips, families with lots of baggage and very early departures, ZRH often remains the more practical choice.
