Munich Airport is relatively far out, at around thirty to forty kilometres from the city. As a result, the train takes longer than in many other cities, which is exactly why the transfer question really matters here.

S-Bahn or express bus

Two S-Bahn lines connect the airport with the city, and both take around forty to forty-five minutes to reach the centre. There is also an express bus to the Hauptbahnhof. Both are solid options, but after a long-haul flight they can feel like a long final leg.

Private transfer: fixed price and a driver who waits

A pre-booked private transfer means: the driver knows your flight number, waits if there is a delay, the price is fixed before booking, and luggage is included. It is the right option for late arrivals, for families needing child seats, and for anything farther out than the city centre. If you are travelling light and want to stay spontaneous, you do not need it.

Uber in Munich: private hire vehicle with driver

As everywhere in Germany, Uber in Munich arranges private hire vehicles with drivers, and in some cases taxis too. You cannot simply hail one from the street, and after the journey the vehicles must return to their operating base. So expect a bit of waiting time, especially during trade fair periods and at weekends.

When a private transfer makes sense

For trade fair visits, family trips, ski luggage, or a destination in the Alps, on Lake Tegernsee or in Salzburg, a pre-booked driver is the calmest solution. Even more so for Oktoberfest arrivals with luggage, because the S-Bahn is very crowded then.

Car hire: ideal for the Alps

In the city, public transport is enough; in Munich, parking is expensive and there is a low-emission zone. For the Alps, the lakes and Austria, however, a car is perfect — just remember the vignette for Austria.

How Reisedrop handles the question after booking

After your hotel booking we do not ask whether you want to buy a transfer, we ask how you are getting to your accommodation in München. You see two options side by side: a private transfer you lock in beforehand, and a direct link into the Uber app with your destination pre-filled if you would rather stay flexible. No flood of suppliers, no invented guide prices. Private transfers and rental cars are booked with external providers, and with Uber you are forwarded straight to Uber. Price, availability and booking sit with the respective provider. We are not a partner of Uber and deliberately show no Uber prices.

💡 Save your hotel address as a screenshot before departure, ideally in the local language. It helps any driver more than an app description and also works without a data connection.
