New York has three major airports, and the difference between them is greater than between two European cities. From the best-known one in the south-east, it is around twenty-five kilometres to Manhattan, and in traffic it takes far longer than the map suggests.
AirTrain plus rail
From the terminal, an automated train takes you to the interchange points, and from there you continue by commuter rail or Subway. This is the cheapest option and often the fastest when the roads are congested, but it does mean changing with luggage and can feel tiring after a long-haul flight. Newark has its own rail connection, while LaGuardia has no rail link.
Private transfer: fixed price and a driver who waits
A pre-booked private transfer means this: the driver knows your flight number, waits if you are delayed, the price is fixed before you book, and luggage is included. It is the best option for late arrivals, for families needing child seats, and for anywhere farther out than the city centre. If you are travelling light and want to stay spontaneous, you do not need it.
Uber in New York: available, with pick-up by terminal
Ride services are part of everyday life in New York and are permitted at all airports, including the option to reserve a trip in advance. Pick-up zones vary by terminal and are shown in the app. In peak periods and when it rains, expect fares to rise sharply; by contrast, the classic Yellow Cab has an official flat fare from the best-known airport to Manhattan.
When a private transfer makes sense
After an intercontinental flight, with family, or when arriving in the evening, a pre-booked driver is the calmest option: fixed price, a vehicle that suits the size of your group, and no discussion about bridge and tunnel tolls. For onward journeys to New Jersey, Long Island or the Catskills, all the more so.
Car hire: never in Manhattan
Car park prices, one-way streets and congestion charges make having a car in Manhattan pointless. For a road trip to Upstate New York, New England or the coast, it is ideal — but you are better off picking it up only on the day you continue your journey.
How Reisedrop handles the question after booking
After your hotel booking we do not ask whether you want to buy a transfer, we ask how you are getting to your accommodation in New York. You see two options side by side: a private transfer you lock in beforehand, and a direct link into the Uber app with your destination pre-filled if you would rather stay flexible. No flood of suppliers, no invented guide prices. Private transfers and rental cars are booked with external providers, and with Uber you are forwarded straight to Uber. Price, availability and booking sit with the respective provider. We are not a partner of Uber and deliberately show no Uber prices.
