Hire car for 25 francs a day, a riad stay for 30, tajine for 5 — and in between Atlas passes, coastal roads and desert camps: the Morocco road trip is TikTok’s classic adventure budget break. Episode 5 of our series «Seen on TikTok. Travel drop checked.»: we run through the entire road-trip week — flights, car, sleep, food. Spoiler: staying under CHF 800 is doable. But everything hinges on the hire car.
What TikTok promises
The clips show the hairpin bends of the Tizi n'Tichka, sunsets in Essaouira, riads with courtyard pools, and the message is clear: Morocco is the cheapest adventure you can reach by plane in three hours. Broadly true. What the clips leave out: full insurance on the hire car, deposits of 1000+ francs on your credit card, fuel and toll costs — and the fact that those 25-franc deals often come with nasty surprises at collection.
Getting there: short and often affordable
Edelweiss flies direct from Zurich to Marrakech in a little over 3.5 hours, and from Basel there’s easyJet — return fares from 120 to 250 francs, and often under 180 outside the school holidays. Marrakech is the ideal starting point for the classic loop: Atlas — Aït-Ben-Haddou — Ouarzazate — Essaouira — back to Marrakech. All perfectly doable in a week, without stress.
The hire car: this is where your budget is decided
A small car costs 180 to 250 francs per week with reputable providers, including proper fully comprehensive cover with no excess. The 15-franc-a-day rates from the cheapest providers often end in extra insurance at the desk, high deposits and arguments over scratches when you return the car. Our advice: pay 30 to 50 francs more for a provider with good reviews — it’s the cheapest insurance on the whole trip. Petrol: around 1.20 francs per litre, so roughly 60 to 80 francs for the week.
On the ground: Morocco delivers
Riads and guesthouses away from the main tourist hotspots cost 25 to 45 francs per night for a double room — often with breakfast and a roof terrace included. Food: tajine or couscous in a local restaurant 4 to 8 francs, in a stylish riad restaurant 15 to 20. Entry fees — Aït-Ben-Haddou, gardens, kasbahs — stay in single digits. With 30 to 40 francs a day for food and experiences, you’ll live very well.
The honest road-trip total
Per person, travelling as a pair, shoulder season (March–May, October–November): Zurich–Marrakech flight 170 francs, hire car incl. fully comprehensive cover split between two 110, petrol split 35, 6 nights in riads/guesthouses split 105, food and drink 130, entry fees, tips and hammam 80. Total: around 630 francs. Even with a desert camp night (+60 to 90), you stay under 800. In July/August it gets hotter than is comfortable — and pricier too.
Conclusion: checked — doable, with the hire-car trick
The verdict of the series: «Morocco road trip under CHF 800» checks out — even with a buffer. Condition one: don’t pick the cheapest hire-car provider, pick the best-reviewed one with proper fully comprehensive cover. Condition two: travel in the shoulder season — in spring the Atlas is in bloom, in autumn the light is at its best. Get those two things right and for 800 francs you’ll get an adventure that feels like twice the price.
