Hundreds of people in evening wear look out over the black sea, the crew hands out the last champagne glasses, then the whole ship counts down together – and at the stroke of midnight the sky explodes. New Year's Eve on a cruise ship is one of those travel moments you never forget. Here's how the night really unfolds on board – and what you should know beforehand.
The evening: gala dinner, countdown, deck party
On almost every ship, 31 December is the most festive night of the voyage: a multi-course gala dinner (included in the fare with most lines), live music in every bar and, from around 10 pm, the big party on the pool deck. At midnight there's either the ship's own fireworks or a front-row seat for the shows on shore, depending on the route. Then the night goes on – the on-board clubs close last on this evening.
The most beautiful New Year's backdrops at sea
Funchal on Madeira is legendary: the fireworks over the bay rank among Europe's biggest, and cruise ships get front-row berths – many lines plan their Canaries itineraries around it. In Dubai you watch the Burj Khalifa show from the water; in the Caribbean you celebrate barefoot on deck at 28 degrees. And on the open sea with no land in sight? Then the ship lights its own fireworks or a big laser and light show – under a starry sky you'll never see like this on land.
What costs extra – and what doesn't?
The gala dinner and the parties are almost always included. Budget for extras like champagne outside your drinks package, the speciality-restaurant surcharge for the New Year's menu and shore excursions to the fireworks hotspots. Important: New Year's sailings cost 15 to 40 percent more than the same trip in January, depending on the route – but the programme is one of a kind. If you're flexible, book the departure right after New Year and save considerably.
Dress code, time zones and the best midnight spot
Most ships call the gala evening 'festive' – a dark suit or evening dress is right, a tuxedo is only expected on classic lines. Curious detail: if your ship is sailing west, the New Year's night can stretch by an hour thanks to the time change. And the best spot at midnight? The port or starboard side facing the fireworks – ask at reception the day before which way the ship will face, and claim your railing spot half an hour early.
