Costa Rica is often sold as a road trip destination, but in 2026 it works especially well for slow travel if you deliberately scale things back. Instead of linking many national parks in a short time, the country works better with longer stays in one or two regions, for example on the Pacific coast or in a lush inland setting. That’s ideal for retreats: yoga, mindfulness, cooking or surfing can be combined with access to nature without constantly moving on.
- Nature experiences have more impact with time than on a rushed round trip
- Retreat locations combine jungle, coast and clear daily structure
- Longer stays reduce transfer days across long distances

Best time to go
The drier period falls in many areas between December and April, but greener months can also be attractive for longer stays. In the rainy season it’s quieter and often less crowded if you can handle showers. Cheaper travel windows are often outside the main holiday periods and New Year.
Booking tips
- It’s better to stay longer in one region than split coast and inland into too many short sections.
- For retreats, check transfer time from the airport, because road journeys can take longer than expected.
