September is often one of the smartest months for cheaper flights. Peak summer demand eases, while weather around the Mediterranean is still usually pleasant. For travellers departing from the Netherlands, timing matters most: not every week in September is priced the same. Because school holidays can differ by region and popular sun routes such as Spain, the Canary Islands, Turkey and Greece attract strong demand, it pays to stay flexible on departure day, airport and route instead of focusing on one fixed destination only.
Why September often works well
Price logic in September is usually simpler than in July and August. The absolute summer peak fades, business travel is not yet fully back everywhere, and many airlines still keep part of their summer capacity in the market. That often creates more space on many European routes. Outside the first days of September, better opportunities tend to appear. Travellers without a fixed departure day usually do best with midweek flights and trip lengths that do not run exactly from one weekend to the next.
Which destinations often make sense
For the Dutch market, Spain and the Canary Islands remain logical options because there are many connections from AMS and often from EIN and RTM as well. Turkey and Greece stay popular, but that large supply also means September can bring more interesting combinations than high summer. For a lower total travel budget, cities and coastal airports with strong airline competition tend to work best. Islands with limited capacity or routes with only a few weekly flights are usually less forgiving if your goal is to fly as cheaply as possible.
Which departure airport is smartest
AMS offers the widest choice and the highest frequencies, which helps if you want flexibility. Still, the lowest fare is not automatically from Amsterdam. EIN can be strong on price-sensitive leisure routes, while RTM may appeal if you want to save time and live nearby. MST has a smaller network, but on specific routes it can still make sense if your total travel cost ends up lower. So do not look only at the ticket: include parking, train costs, extra baggage and the timing of departure or arrival.
When in September to look
Not all of September behaves the same way. The first days of the month can still be lifted by late-summer traffic and regional school holiday patterns. After that, demand often settles and lower fares become easier to find. For sun destinations, the period after the last busy holiday changeovers is often the most interesting. Avoid an overly rigid search setup: leaving one or two days earlier or later often matters more than spending longer searching the exact same dates. Always check official school holiday calendars for north, central and south regions.
How to keep the total cost low
Cheap flights in September are not only about the base fare. On popular routes, hold baggage, seat selection, airport transport and food at the airport can quickly eat into your budget. If you travel light, low-cost carriers are more likely to remain the best option. For a beach week, cabin baggage only often works well; for a longer trip, a slightly higher fare with better baggage rules may be smarter. Always compare separate elements, because on Reisedrop you book flights, hotels and cruises individually rather than as a package.
When September is less predictable
If you are tied to one weekend, one specific airport or exactly one island, you have less room to optimise and may run into higher fares more quickly. Routes to very popular late-summer destinations can also stay surprisingly firm, especially when capacity is limited. In that case, it helps to include nearby arrival airports or split the trip between a city and the coast. So September is not automatically cheap, but from the Netherlands it is often a month where smart flexibility pays off more clearly than in peak season.
