While winter covers are being pulled over the greens in Switzerland, peak season begins on the Red Sea: Egypt is Europe’s shortest route to winter golf at 22 to 25 degrees – and nowhere are hotels with included green fees quite so common. From November to April, the Red Sea enjoys steady 20 to 26 degrees, rain is practically non-existent, and the courses stay deep green thanks to seawater desalination. The flight from Zurich takes around 4 hours 30 – hardly longer than to the Canary Islands. Only high summer (June to August) is too hot for golf, at 35 degrees+.
Madinat Makadi: the green-fee-inclusive mecca
20 minutes south of Hurghada lies the Madinat Makadi Golf Resort complex: an 18-hole championship course plus a 9-hole academy course, surrounded by resorts that build unlimited golf into the package. This is exactly where the «green fee included» model is implemented most consistently – you check in and play as often as you like.
El Gouna: lagoon town with 18 holes
The private lagoon town of El Gouna, north of Hurghada, combines golf with the loveliest little town on the Red Sea: the 18-hole course (design: Karl Litten/Fred Couples) winds its way through lagoons, and many hotels offer green-fee packages. In the evening, the marina, restaurants and Egypt’s most relaxed atmosphere beckon.
Soma Bay: The Cascades – world-class by the reef
On the Soma Bay peninsula, The Cascades (design: Gary Player) is waiting – quite possibly the country’s most spectacular course: championship golf right above the house reef, regularly ranked among Africa’s top courses. The bay’s resorts put together golf packages with several rounds – ideal for anyone wanting to combine world-class golf with diving or kitesurfing.
Costs & getting there
Direct flights from Zurich to Hurghada operate several times a week, and transfers to Makadi (20 min.), El Gouna (40 min.) and Soma Bay (45 min.) are short. Visa: on arrival, approx. 25 USD.
Conclusion: who Egypt is worth it for
Anyone wanting to play golf between November and April without having to budget extra for tee times and green fees will find the best overall package on the Red Sea – especially frequent players taking advantage of unlimited rounds. On Reisedrop, you can spot the right hotels by the gold «Green fee incl.» badge; the golf calendar shows all dates and the best time to travel.
