150 kilometres of coastline, more than 40 courses and more hours of sunshine than almost anywhere else in Europe: the Algarve did not become the continent's most awarded golf region by accident. Tee off once on a clifftop fairway above the Atlantic and it makes immediate sense.
The finest courses between Faro and Lagos
Your first stop, usually, is the 'Golden Triangle' around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo: immaculately maintained championship courses that regularly host the European tour. Around Vilamoura, five courses lie within walking distance of the marina, which is handy if you'd rather skip the rental car. Further west near Lagos, places like Palmares look out over the bay and feel distinctly calmer, often with lower prices too.
Which base works best for you?
Vilamoura is the strongest base if golf is the main event, with restaurants and nightlife close at hand. Albufeira does well for beaches and has the largest hotel choice, so it suits mixed groups nicely. Faro is ideal for short trips because of the airport: land, check in, and be on the first tee within 90 minutes. Transfers are short almost everywhere. No destination is more than 60 minutes from the airport.
