With autumn school holidays falling right into that window, two worlds meet on board: families with costumed kids, and adults enjoying the spooky-beautiful entertainment at surprisingly fair shoulder-season prices.
Which cruise lines really celebrate Halloween?
The big family lines go all in: AIDA turns pool deck and theatre into a pumpkin wonderland in late October with parties for all ages. Costa and MSC follow on their Mediterranean routes with themed dinners, costume contests and kids-club specials. On American ships from Royal Caribbean or Norwegian it gets a level bigger: full decoration worlds, horror movie nights and crew parades. If you prefer it subtle, pick classic lines like Hapag-Lloyd – there Halloween stays a footnote.
With kids on board: costume parade instead of trick-or-treat tour
For families, a Halloween cruise almost runs itself: kids' clubs organise pumpkin carving, face painting and a costume parade through the ship – trick-or-treating happens cabin by cabin, completely traffic-safe. Good to know: your own door decoration is allowed on most lines, while open candles and fog machines are banned for fire safety. Pack the costume in your hand luggage – that way it's ready even if your suitcase is delayed.
Prices: October is the underrated cruise month
Outside the school-holiday weeks, late October in the Mediterranean is classic shoulder season: a pleasant 20 to 25 degrees in southern Spain, the Balearics or the Canaries – and cabin prices often 20 to 30 percent below summer levels. If you have school-age kids, book the holiday week early; everyone else can take the weeks before or after and still celebrate Halloween on board, because the ship stays decorated all month.
