Choosing between Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh mainly comes down to three things: coral reef quality, ease of getting around, and the time of year you want to travel from Italy. For many travellers in Italy, the question comes up before spring bridge holidays or for August, when the Red Sea joins Greece and Spain among the most searched beach options. The two resorts have clear similarities, but they do not deliver the same trip. If you want sea, snorkelling and resorts, the real difference is the kind of coastline and the pace of the holiday.

Coral reef: Sharm is often stronger for easy snorkelling

If the coral reef is your top priority, Sharm el Sheikh usually has the edge. In many areas the seabed drops more quickly and the reefs sit closer to shore, with jetties and access points designed for travellers who want to snorkel every day without arranging long boat trips. Hurghada is still a solid choice, but the water is often shallower near the beach and for the most interesting spots it is more common to rely on boat excursions. In short, Sharm is usually the more direct choice if fish and reef come first.

Access from Italy: Hurghada is often easier to handle

For access, Hurghada is often the simpler option, especially if you want a beach holiday without too many internal transfers. From Italian airports such as MXP, BGY, FCO or NAP, availability changes with season and demand, but Hurghada is often seen as easier for resorts spread along a broad, straightforward coastline. Sharm works well if you plan to stay in specific areas such as Naama Bay, Sharks Bay or Nabq, but it is worth checking airport to hotel distance and the exact sea access before booking.

Best time to go: spring and autumn are usually the most balanced

To decide between Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh by season, the practical rule is simple: spring and autumn are usually the most balanced periods. Temperatures are often easier to handle, the sea is still good for swimming and snorkelling, and demand pressure can be less extreme than in August. During Italian spring bridge holidays, though, prices often become firmer, so flexibility on departure airport and trip length helps. In summer, both work well, but the heat can weigh more heavily on any activity outside the water.

What kind of holiday do you want

Hurghada suits travellers who picture an easy resort holiday with more accessible beaches, boat trips, diving and a generally relaxed setup. Sharm el Sheikh is more focused for travellers who want a stay built around hotel plus reef, with daily life centred on the sea. If you are travelling with small children or prefer a gentler entry into the water, Hurghada can be more convenient in many properties. If daily snorkelling and underwater scenery are your main criteria, Sharm is often the stronger match.

💡 Always check how you enter the sea: sandy beach, jetty or platform can completely change the stay. Two hotels in the same resort can offer very different access, especially for children, less confident swimmers or anyone who wants to spend long periods in the water.

Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh: which one makes more sense

Hurghada makes more sense if you want an easier holiday to set up, with good access, swimmable sea and a balance between relaxation and excursions. Sharm el Sheikh makes more sense if the real reason for the trip is the coral reef and you are willing to choose the right area and hotel carefully. For many travellers in Italy, the final decision also depends on the calendar: in very high demand periods such as August and some bridge holidays, it helps to widen the search across airports like MXP, LIN, BGY, FCO, CIA, VCE, NAP and BLQ. The better choice is not universal; it depends on how you want to experience the Red Sea.
