Every winter, right on cue with the first snow, the same debate returns to the family table: do we stay in Switzerland, or head “across the border” to Austria because it’s supposedly so much cheaper there? We wanted to know for sure, so we did the maths — line by line, for a family of four, one ski week, school sports holidays. The result surprised even us in two places.
Ski pass: the myth is starting to crack
Let’s start with the surprise: when it comes to ski passes, the gap is smaller than the regulars at the pub would have you believe. A 6-day pass in Zermatt or St. Anton, the equivalent is 380 to 420. Yes, that’s a difference, but not one that justifies the drive all by itself.
Hotel and mountain hut: Austria wins here, clearly
When it comes to a four-star hotel with half board and spa, there’s no avoiding the truth: in the Zillertal or Saalbach, you’ll pay 30 to 40 percent less than for the equivalent in Grindelwald or Arosa. The difference is visible on the mountain too — schnitzel and Skiwasser for four cost roughly a third less in Austria. But — and this is a big but — if you rent a holiday flat in Switzerland and cook for yourselves in the evening, you wipe out much of that advantage. And after a ski day, raclette from your own pan tastes best anyway.
Switzerland’s underrated trump card: getting there
From Zurich to Ischgl is three and a half hours — if the Arlberg behaves, which during the school sports holidays, as we all know, it rarely does. From Lucerne to the Central Swiss resorts: 45 minutes. Once you honestly factor in petrol, vignettes and the nerves lost in traffic jams, the savings abroad shrink noticeably. For families with small children (“Mum, how much longer?”), the short journey is often worth more than a 200-Franken price difference. That’s not a calculation, that’s lived experience.
The bottom line in Franken — no sugar-coating
And here’s the twist: Lenzerheide with a holiday flat — 4,800. So the honest answer is this: Austria wins for the classic hotel holiday, Switzerland wins with a holiday flat, a short journey and smart timing. And everywhere, one rule holds true: if you can avoid the school holiday weeks, that’s where the biggest savings are.
