Just forty minutes north of Lisbon, you get to Ericeira, Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve. The stretch is short, just four kilometres, but packed with variety: seven world-class breaks, from mellow beach breaks for your first proper wave to the infamous reef break Coxos, where even seasoned surfers go to measure themselves. And between sessions? A whitewashed fishing village, fresh fish on the grill, salt still on your skin.
The spots: the right wave for every level
If you’re starting out, Praia de Ribeira d'Ilhas or the town beach Foz do Lizandro make the most sense. Both have surf schools, forgiving sandy bottoms and enough room that things don’t feel hectic. Intermediates usually make for Pedra Branca and Reef, two reliable waves right in front of town. Then there’s Coxos. Fast, hollow rights, one of Europe’s standout point breaks, and absolutely not one to underestimate: rocks, currents and locals all require respect.
Best time to go & water temperature
The prime stretch runs from September to November. You get consistent Atlantic swell, that warm late-summer feel and, thankfully, far fewer crowds than in August. Water temperature sits at 17–20 degrees, so a 3/2 wetsuit does the job. Summer is smaller and friendlier for beginners; winter turns heavier and much more serious. If your dates are flexible, late September is the sweet spot for waves, weather and price.
Staying & living in the village
Ericeira is compact, which is part of the charm. You can walk pretty much everywhere, so it’s worth looking for somewhere in the old town or up above Ribeira d'Ilhas. Places range from surf camps with dorm beds to boutique guesthouses and hotels with ocean views. Come evening, head to the Praça. Petiscos, a glass of Vinho Verde, sunset over the Atlantic. Hard to argue with that.
