If you fly from Milan, choosing the right airport can matter almost as much as the flight itself. MXP, LIN and BGY suit different needs: long-haul trips, quick business travel, low-cost weekends or holidays with luggage. There is no universal winner, only the airport that fits your route, the area you leave from and how much you value transfer time. Looking only at the airfare often creates a comparison that is not realistic once the whole trip is considered.
LIN: the easiest option, but not always the cheapest
Linate is the natural choice if you live in the city or travel on a tight schedule. It is close to central Milan, easy to reach and usually cuts total door-to-door time, especially for short trips with hand luggage only. In return, the route network is typically more selective and competition on some routes can be narrower than at the other airports. If frequency, speed and less travel stress matter most, LIN often makes sense even when the fare is not the lowest.
MXP: broader choice, especially for long-haul travel
Malpensa is the airport to look at when you want more airline options, more schedules or long-haul destinations. It usually offers a wider network of full-service flights and connections that make it easier to build more complex itineraries. The trade-off is distance: getting there from Milan takes more planning and a safer time buffer. Still, if you want a serious comparison across airlines and destinations, MXP is often the strongest starting point.
Malpensa Express: when it really makes the trip easier
The Malpensa Express is often the most straightforward way to reach MXP without relying on road traffic. If you start from an area that connects well to Milan’s rail network, the train makes the transfer more predictable and usually less tiring than going by car. It becomes especially useful during busy traffic periods, when road journeys can stretch. If you travel very early, very late or with a group and lots of bags, compare overall convenience carefully before deciding.
BGY: when Bergamo genuinely wins
Bergamo Orio al Serio really stands out when you find a very competitive nonstop route or when you are flying to European destinations well served by low-cost carriers. In those cases, the fare advantage can outweigh the less direct transfer from Milan. But BGY is not automatically the best deal: you need to factor in coach transfers, total journey time, waiting and baggage rules. The right comparison is total door-to-door cost and time, not just the first fare you see.
How to choose between MXP, LIN and BGY in practice
Choose LIN if your main goal is to save time and keep things simple. Go for MXP if you want more choice, long-haul flights or stronger combinations of schedules and airlines. Consider BGY when a low-cost carrier has the right route and the transfer still works well from where you live. Before booking, also check heavy travel periods and public holidays on the official Italian calendar: on busy days, logistics often matter more than the airfare alone.
