Around 16 percent of the Swiss population practices yoga – and more and more of them travel for it. Nearly 900 billion US dollars were recently spent on wellness tourism worldwide, and retreat guests spend significantly more per trip than the average traveller. Time for an honest guide: where do yoga, surf and detox retreats from Switzerland really pay off, what does a time-out cost – and how do you book it cleverly?
What a retreat from Switzerland really costs
The maths is simpler than many think: a good Mediterranean wellness hotel starts at around CHF 500–900 per person for seven nights in a double room in the shoulder season. The flight from Zurich, Basel or Geneva adds roughly CHF 100–200 return – often less to Mallorca or Lisbon. Guided premium retreats with a yoga programme, classes and meals run between CHF 1,500 and 2,500. Separating hotel and programme often saves several hundred francs.
The sweet spot: yoga plus a second activity
42 percent of retreat-interested travellers want to combine yoga with something else – surfing, hiking, cooking or massage. This is exactly where combo destinations shine: Ericeira and Peniche in Portugal pair morning flows with Atlantic waves, Interlaken and the Valais deliver mountain panoramas for yoga & hiking, and on Mallorca the studio, beach and Serra de Tramuntana are never more than 30 minutes apart.
The best destinations at a glance
Mallorca and Ibiza are the classics with a short journey (under two flight hours) and a huge studio density. The Algarve and Portugal's west coast score with yoga & surf camps and mild winters. Crete and Santorini shine in spring and autumn. Marrakech delivers riad atmosphere plus the Atlas mountains. And if you don't want to fly at all: Interlaken, Lucerne and the Engadin make the Swiss yoga weekend train-friendly – no flight needed.
Reset instead of incense: the new motivation
More than half of retreat-interested travellers name mental health as their main motive, and a good four in ten specifically want to recover from stress or burnout. Modern retreats therefore don't sell a lifestyle but a state of mind: switching off, breathing, getting energy back. When choosing, look for small groups, a clear daily structure and nature on your doorstep – that works better than any spa menu.
Book cleverly: individually instead of a package
Our approach at Reisedrop: book hotel, flight and activities individually and independently of each other. That makes your time-out more transparent and flexible – switch hotels, extend by two nights or take the earlier flight home without breaking a package. In our retreat world you see the cheapest wellness hotel per destination plus an indicative flight price from Zurich – honestly added up per person. Namaste and safe travels!
