Routes that price lower
Amsterdam is usually priced through Schiphol Airport, code AMS, which sits about 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. In our own flight readings, the cheapest fare we measured was Frankfurt to Amsterdam with Lufthansa on 2026-10-29 for EUR 135. That matters because short-haul routes into AMS often compete with rail on total journey time, so airlines tend to keep hand-luggage-only fares tight and simple. If you are starting in western Germany, Brussels or northern France, compare the airport trip itself against a direct train to Centraal. A low air fare can disappear once airport transfers and checked baggage are added.
Departure days and booking window
For Amsterdam, departure timing often matters more than season alone because city-break demand bunches around Friday evening and Sunday return flights. Midweek departures, especially Tuesday or Wednesday, usually avoid the heaviest business and weekend leisure overlap on European routes. November and January to March are the cheaper months by experience, partly because Dutch canal-city demand softens outside Christmas peaks and spring flower traffic has not started yet. That does not guarantee a lower fare, but it changes where to look first. For a short-haul trip to AMS, check prices regularly across a compact booking window rather than assuming very early booking always wins.
Baggage and airport trade-offs
On Amsterdam routes, the fare structure matters as much as the headline number. Many cheaper economy tickets include only a small cabin bag; a larger trolley, seat selection or airport check-in can raise the final cost quickly. Schiphol is efficient, but it is also strict on hand-baggage size at many European carriers, so measuring bag rules before paying matters. Another trade-off is arrival time: landing late can still work because trains run directly from Schiphol station under the terminal to Amsterdam Centraal, while a very early flight may require an airport hotel or expensive pre-dawn ground transport at the departure side.

How much is a flight to Amsterdam?
Outside holiday peaks, plan on from ~$65–165 round trip. Cheapest window: August. Booking 2–5 months ahead usually wins.
When is it cheapest to fly?
August. Tuesday/Wednesday departures shave off a bit more.
Does Reisedrop include bag fees?
Yes – basic fares often look cheaper than they are. We price bags in on request.
Which airport should I use for Amsterdam?
For Amsterdam itself, Schiphol Airport (AMS) is the practical choice because the train runs directly from the airport station to Amsterdam Centraal in roughly 15 to 20 minutes. That keeps transfer planning simple and makes late arrivals easier than at more distant regional airports.
Are the cheapest fares usually good value?
Only if you check what is included. On short European routes to AMS, the lowest fare may exclude a full cabin bag, seat choice and any flexibility. If you need luggage or might change plans, a higher fare family can work out cheaper overall.
