All-inclusive or book separately: the real euro check

What really costs less? Compare all-inclusive with separate flight and hotel bookings, without hidden assumptions.

An all-inclusive package often looks simple: 1 price, 1 booking, less hassle. Booking separately can feel smarter if you find a sharp flight from Amsterdam Schiphol, Eindhoven or Rotterdam The Hague and choose your own hotel. But the real difference is rarely just the base airfare or room rate. To compare honestly, Dutch travellers should look at the total trip cost in euro terms: what is truly included, what will be added later, and how much flexibility or protection comes with it. Only then can you see which option actually fits your trip better.

Always compare the total cost, not the headline price

The biggest mistake is comparing a package holiday with only the cheapest flight plus a separate hotel. That is not a fair comparison. Match the same trip length, room type, meal plan, baggage level and roughly similar flight times. An early outbound and late inbound flight can give you much more holiday time than a cheaper combination with awkward schedules. Also compare departures from AMS, EIN and RTM, because a lower fare can easily be offset by longer ground travel or added extras. The cheapest option on paper is often not the best value door to door.

These 4 costs are easy to forget when booking separately

Travellers who book flight and hotel separately often miss 4 cost items that can shrink the gap fast. First, baggage: many fares include only a small personal item. Second, transfers: you need to arrange and pay for the ride from the airport to the hotel and back. Third, seat selection: if you want to sit together or simply avoid a middle seat, that may cost extra. Finally, food and drinks: with all-inclusive or half board, part of that spend is already covered, while with separate bookings you pay on the spot. These 4 items often decide whether “cheap” is really cheap.

When booking separately can genuinely be the smarter move

Separate booking can make perfect sense if you are not after a standard beach holiday. For example, if you want to combine multiple hotels, travel with hand luggage only, arrive late in the day, or stay in a boutique hotel that is not usually sold in packages. It also often works better for city breaks or shorter stays than a classic all-inclusive format. And you can react faster to price movements across airlines and hotels. With Reisedrop’s price alert and Drop principle, you can track those moves, while remembering that every travel service here is booked separately and should be judged that way.

Package holiday or separate services: legally they are not the same

In the Netherlands, the legal difference between a package holiday and separate travel services matters. With a package, you generally have broader protection if a major part of the trip is cancelled or substantially changed, because the organiser is responsible for the package as a whole. If you book the flight and hotel separately, those are separate contracts. In that case, disruptions usually have to be handled provider by provider, based on each set of conditions for changes, cancellation or refunds. That is not automatically worse, but it is something to factor in consciously before booking.

💡 Tip: before booking, make a simple 4-line checklist: baggage, transfer, seat and meals. Only then compare the package with the separate booking.

For Dutch travellers, convenience can matter almost as much as price

If you are travelling with children, going away in school holiday periods or simply do not want much planning, a package can be stronger both emotionally and practically. You often get fewer separate decisions and more budget predictability. If you travel flexibly, outside peak periods and with light luggage, building the trip yourself can be more attractive. So the honest answer is not automatically all-inclusive or automatically separate booking, but the option that matches your departure airport, travel style and risk tolerance. Compare carefully, read the conditions, and then choose your hotel.
