Crete or Rhodes is a classic choice for Norwegian travellers heading to Greece, but the islands do not suit exactly the same kind of holiday. Crete is larger, more varied and needs more planning if you want to see a lot. Rhodes is more compact and easier to understand on a shorter trip. From Norway, you will usually see the broadest range of options from OSL, while BGO, TRD and TRF often have fewer departures and more seasonal patterns. So start with the kind of trip you actually want: beach time, town life, quiet days, family travel or a road-trip feel.

Size and pace

The clearest difference is scale. Crete is large enough that distances shape the whole holiday, and it is easy to underestimate driving time between beaches, towns and mountain areas. That gives you more variety, but also more logistics. Rhodes is easier to grasp straight away. You can stay in one base and still cover a lot without long day trips. For a one-week holiday, Rhodes often works well if you want a simple trip. For two weeks or more, Crete gives you more room to combine different regions and styles of holiday.

Beaches and swimming

Both islands have strong beach options, but the feel is different. Crete offers a wider range, from famous lagoons and long sandy beaches to smaller coves and coasts that can be more exposed to weather. You can find both family-friendly areas and quieter spots, though often with some travel involved. Rhodes is more straightforward: many popular beaches are fairly accessible from the main resort areas. The east coast is often the first choice for calmer swimming conditions, while the west side can be windier. If you want variety and to explore different beach types, Crete stands out. If you want easy access and simplicity, Rhodes often wins.

Town life, culture and day trips

If you like mixing beaches with towns and history, both islands deliver, but in different ways. Crete has several larger urban centres and a stronger sense of being more than a pure holiday island. You can combine old quarters, local villages, museums and nature in a way that makes the trip feel layered. Rhodes has a more concentrated holiday profile, with the old town of Rhodes Town as a natural focal point. That makes it easy for travellers who want a few clear highlights without much planning. For short city-style breaks within a sun holiday, Rhodes is often the simpler option.

Family holiday or couple’s trip

For families, the choice often comes down to simplicity versus variety. Rhodes is often practical if you want to reduce transport, stay close to the beach and keep the plan easy to manage. That can be especially useful with younger children and a preference for short transfers. Crete works well for families who want to combine pool time, beach days, day trips and different bases on the same trip. For couples, the choice depends more on pace. Rhodes suits an uncomplicated sun break with dinners, beaches and a few excursions. Crete fits better if the holiday should also feel like exploration.

💡 Decide first how much time you actually want to spend on transport. If the answer is ‘as little as possible’, Rhodes is often easier. If the answer is ‘that’s fine as long as we get more variety’, Crete is usually the better match.

What time of year suits each island best?

For Norwegian travellers, season matters a lot, both for flight options and overall trip cost. During school holiday periods, demand is higher, especially from OSL, while the selection from BGO, TRD and TRF is often narrower and more sensitive to the season. Outside the busiest weeks, you can often get more value from your budget and more flexibility in hotel choice. Crete handles longer stays well because the island gives you more ways to fill your days. Rhodes works very well when you want an efficient week in the sun. Always check official school holiday calendars before fixing your travel window.
