Travel is freedom. For LGBTQ+ travellers, though, the best trip usually begins with one simple thing: a place where you never feel you have to edit yourself. The good news is that the list of open-minded, safe and genuinely exciting community destinations has grown massively. Here are the 7 places that should be right at the top of your 2026 list, along with the practical tips most guidebooks quietly skip.
1. Barcelona: Europe's rainbow capital by the sea
The Eixample district – affectionately called «Gaixample» – is the centre of the scene: bars, bookshops, cafĂ©s and hotels that don't merely make room for the community, they actually celebrate it. Then there's the city beach, GaudĂ, and one of southern Europe's biggest Pride festivals in June. Barcelona is an easy first step into community travel: safe, central, uncomplicated.
2. Gran Canaria: Pride 365 days a year
Maspalomas has been Europe's community winter base for decades now. Every evening, the Yumbo Center in Playa del Inglés starts to feel like one enormous open-air living room, the dunes of Maspalomas are legendary, and Winter Pride in November pushes the season well into autumn. Bonus, of course: eternal spring at 24 degrees.
3.–5. Berlin, Amsterdam & Lisbon: city breaks without compromise
Berlin is still Europe's queer institution, from Schöneberg to the CSD parade in July. Amsterdam made history as the first city in the world to celebrate same-sex marriage in 2001, and its August Pride unfolds on canal boats, which is reason enough to go. And Lisbon? Very much the rising star. PrĂncipe Real is one of Europe's loveliest queer neighbourhoods, prices are fair, and the whole vibe feels relaxed.
6. Bangkok: Asia's tolerant metropolis
In 2025 Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to introduce marriage equality, and Bangkok had already been one of Asia's most relaxed metropolises long before that. Silom Soi 4 is the heart of the nightlife, the scene is huge, and Bangkok as a destination offers an almost unfair combination of culture, street food and an island add-on.
7. Malta: small but Europe's champion
Hardly anyone seems to have it on their radar, which is surprising, because Malta has topped the ILGA-Europe ranking of LGBTQ+ rights for years. Add 300 days of sunshine, world-class dive spots and a September Pride that spills across the whole capital of Valletta.
Safety: check briefly, travel relaxed
Before booking, take a quick look at the current ILGA ranking and your foreign office's travel advice. As a rule of thumb, in all destinations listed here, holding hands is a non-issue. In more conservative countries, it's wise to respect local customs and, if in doubt, book discreetly: a double room with one big bed is simply called a «double room» everywhere in the world.
